The NCA training seminar on the ISO 17100 standard “Translation Services” has begun. Requirements for translation services." The main goal of the project is to promote the provision of quality translation services in the Kazakh quality system, where accuracy is no less important than calibration.
The seminar brought together teachers of translation departments, managers and employees of translation agencies, employees of NCA Departments implementing international projects, NCA APAC Evaluator evaluators and other interested parties. The lecturer is Turkish expert Dr. Muzaffer Ozen.
The seminar takes place in an atmosphere of active dialogue, since identical translation is the pinnacle of communication in the professional community and forms the basis for correct actions during accreditation or certification.
“Today there are many translation agencies operating on the market,” NCA Deputy General Director Yerzhan Karassayev addressed the participants. – But how qualified are the services they provide, and how much do their activities comply with the requirements of the ISO 17100 standard? To those present in this room today, NCA is trying to provide the most reliable guideline in this area - an international standard,” he said.
Dr. Ozen, in addition to a detailed analysis of the requirements of the standard with students, shared the experience of the Turkish accreditation body in the field of translation. Thus, when hired, all TURKAK translators undergo a 100-question test to test their knowledge of their native Turkish language. Errors and gaps in the native language serve as a basis for assuming that the applicant will not know a foreign language at an insufficient level, since the mother’s language is a matrix according to the parameters of which the native speaker will “build” knowledge of another language.
Also, TURKAK specialists independently translate international standards, not entrusting this service to third-party organizations, since the abundance of specific terms requires excellent knowledge of both English and Turkish, as well as experience in accreditation, where industry terminology is actively used.
The participants examined in detail the basic requirements of ISO 17100 for translation project management, requirements for personnel, equipment and other resources of translation companies, actively answered questions and, following the example of Dr. Ozen, shared useful facts from the practice of providing translation services, when understanding is not always achieved simple, but ultimately possible.
